This was a class J Consolidation built in Pittsburgh (s/n 26201) in 1903 for the Southern Railway. The number was kept when it was leased by the A&Y. The lease started in January,1938 as replacement for #310. Delivered to A&Y on February 12, 1938, the 449 saw service until the last year of the A&Y's existence and was retired in June, 1950 according to R.E. Prince.

James Bowie of New York  photographed the 449 in Sanford in August, 1938, but differs with Richard E. Prince on the class of this locomotive.  I believe that #449 was a class J. The photo is from David Bott collection.

Note the A&Y lettered caboose. I thought I had a new cab photo, but when I enlarged the photo I was pretty certain that was 862 again (see the photo of 862 in a less pristine condition in the cab section of this website).
