This was a class J Consolidation built at Richmond (s/n 26210) in 1902 for the Southern Railway. The number was kept when it was leased by the A&Y. The #458 entered A&Y rental service in December 1937 as a replacement for #315.  It was valued at $15,900 in 1937 and cost the A&Y $37.50 a month. The 458 was retired in May, 1946 according to R.E. Prince.

Harold K. Vollrath photographed #458 in Greensboro and although the date given was December, 1952, that cannot be right as the A&Y was gone in 1950 and the locomotive was supposedly retired in 1946.
