This was a class J-2 Consolidation built by Baldwin (s/n 21290) in 1902 for the Southern Railway. The number was kept when it was leased by the A&Y. 478 replaced 280 and 338 in the A&Y lease agreement. The 478 was delivered to A&Y on October 26, 1945. The 478 saw service in the last year of the A&Y's existence and was retired in April, 1950.
