This Class H-3 Consolidation was built as Southern Railway #435 by the Richmond Locomotive and Machine Works in 1900 (c/n 2190). It was renumbered 348 in 1903 and kept this number when restencilled for the A&Y. It began operating on the A&Y March 9, 1936 under daily rental from Southern at "family lines price" of $18/day per 6/14/1923 agreement. The 348 was transferred from Danville division. The engine was changed from a daily rental unit to be included under the A&Y - Southern locomotive lease agreement. It was restencilled for the subsidiary on August 1, 1936. This little consolidation was used on the Climax to Ramseur branch because it had a wheelbase sufficiently short for the turntable and was light enough for the weak trestles on that line. Listed November 19, 1937 as valued at $15,500. Rental at that time was $51.59 per month. The 348 presumably served the A&Y until the Southern took over in 1950. The engine was retired July 19, 1952.
