This American Type 4-4-0 was originally built for the CF&YV in December 1883 as original #10. Original #10 and #31 were both on the roster as #10 from 1896-1899 with old #31 serving north of Sanford and #10 serving south. Old #10 was sold to the Southern as part of the A&Y and eventually became part of class B. Under Southern ownership it may have started as A&Y #10, but was renumbered SR #865 by 1903. In 1903, it was renumbered to #1871 to fit with other acquired B class locomotives. In 1907 to make room for new A-7 switchers, the class was renumbered from #1xxx to #3xxx and this locomotive became #3871 on January 3 of that year. It remained 3871 until retirement and was scrapped at Spencer in April 1922.

This undated photo of CF&YV #8 from Walker/Connery Collection gives an idea of what this locomotive may have looked like (although it would have been modernized if it was operated as late as 1922). |
