A&Y 304

A&Y #304

This consolidation was originally numbered 291. It was a Southern Railway H-1 class and the number was changed to 304 by the Southern renumbering. It kept the number 304 under the A&Y according to R.E. Prince, but this is the only reference I have so far of the 304 on the A&Y. Southern retired the locomotive in February of 1939. Apparently, the working life of 304 is not clear.

This locomotive had the following characteristics:

Construction year 1900
Construction number c/n 3034
Constructed by Alco Locomotive Works (Richmond, VA)
Southern Class H-1
Cylinder size (inches) 21"x28"
Steam pressure (pounds per square inch) 200 lbs
Driver size (diameter) 60"
Weight (in pounds) 156,940 lbs
Tractive effort (in pounds) 34,986 lbs

Theo. A. Gay caught the 302 - an H-1 class like the 304 - in Greensboro, NC on June 12, 1939.

From collection of Tom Sink, Greensboro, NC.
Obtained from Mac Connery, Durham, NC.
Also in the Bowie collection that I obtained on eBay.
