This was a class Ks consolidation built by the soon-to-be-Alco Pittsburgh Locomotive and Car Works (c/n 28945) in 1904 for the Southern Railway. The number would have been kept if it was rented by the A&Y.
In April, 1946, the A&Y requested a 22" "wide firebox" engine to be added to the lease. The Southern Railway wrote back that the 655 was available. The 655 was not chosen by the A&Y due to the high cost of repair quoted by the Southern. No evidence exists that the 655 was rented either. According to R.E. Prince, the 655 was retired in May, 1950.
