Personal Interview Survey Page 7

Is cost of construction a major consideration?

Given the likely cost of a layout, yes. But I’m slowly preparing myself.

What personal professional skills do you possess that might be beneficial to the hobby (e.g., Artist, Engineer, Electrician, Railroad Employee)?

    • I’ve done quite a bit of carpentry (built a 30x12 deck 9’ off the ground as well as helped my Dad finish his basement).  I have a small table saw, a jig saw, a 14 volt drill, a circular saw, numerous chisels, a palm sander, etc.  I have many, many hobby and home repair tools.
    • I have a computer and have installed some electrical circuits in my home (and had them inspected by an electrician).  I’ve worked with DCC for at least 5 years and converted a DC modular layout to DCC (with help).  I know how to find the value of a resistor by checking the color rings against a chart.
    • I have painted a backdrop and I painted my daughter’s room to look like the sky with clouds (to my family’s surprise, although my wife liked and encouraged the idea).  I have an airbrush booth and both a single and double action Paasche.
    • I repaired and rebuilt a Volkswagen beetle to pass inspection when I was 15 so it could be my car to drive when I was 16.  My Dad was a pipe fitter, a mechanical engineer and he built our childhood home.  He has tools I don’t (band saw, planer jointer, etc). He helped me rip plywood to match dimensional lumber (and we’re aware of the issues in using plywood given the edges with screws).

Is there anything else about you personally that someone needs to know that might affect the design of the layout?

I’ve been aiming at building an A&Y layout for at least 7 years now. I am afraid I might be letting the perfect get in the way of the good.  I also tend to react negatively at first to any suggestion, but I’m usually pretty reasonable after that. My wife learned this as we refinished our previous home and as we work on our new one (we have acres of wallpaper to strip so we can repaint rooms in this 1960’s era home).
