Notes
  1. The Utah & Northern Ry. was converted to standard gauge between 1886 and 1890.
  2. According to Dick Ebright, UN#3 was a Grant 2-6-0, not a 4-4-0.  It was built 1872, renumbered in 1885 by Union Pacific to #297, off the roster by 1886, and likely used as the stationary boiler at the Eagle Rock, Idaho shops.
  3. According to the owner of PacificNG.com, Pacific Coast Ry. #3 was built by Thomas Paul & Son, rather than Grant.
  4. TC&St.L = Toledo, Cincinnati & St. Louis RR – went bankrupt & returned all engines to builders by 1885/86.
  5. c.n. 1525 is listed twice in G.M.Best data, with no explanation, and is therefore repeated as such here.
  6. T&St.L = Texas and St. Louis – converted to standard gauge in late 1886 or early '87.  Data from "Cotton Belt Locomotives" by Joseph A Strapac and Named Steam Locomotives of North America.  All but 6 of the Grant 4-4-0's were converted to standard gauge by the Tyler, Texas shops, starting in 1887.
  7. G.M.Best data shows #'s 32-51 having 14x20 cylinders, except #35.  This may refer to new cylinders after being rebuilt to standard gauge.
  8. G.M.Best data shows #5 having 16x20 cylinders.
