Atlantic & Yadkin modeling by Kevin von der LIppe
Kevin is a member and officer of the Greensboro
chapter of the NRHS and is a coauthor with me on a TIES magazine
article on the history of the A&Y. In addition, he is a
co-organizer of the Carolina Railroad Prototype Modeler (RPM) meet
in Winston-Salem, NC. He is an accomplished modeler. I will be
showcasing his work here. I invite any other A&Y modeler
who wishes to have their work shown here to send me photos,
information on how they constructed their models, and permission to
share them on this web site.
Kevin just recently sent me this photo of his model
of a grocery store that sat near the Walnut Cove station on the
A&Y and appeared in a photo by Peter or Roger Farrell.
Compare the prototype and Kevin's beautiful interpretation of it in
HO scale. Click on the thumbnails to see full size images.
Wow! I promised more to come yesterday and today Kevin sent me
other photos of his layout in the Belews Creek area
Enjoy the thumbnails or click to see

Kevin has depicted Belews Creek from an ICC photo.
The road is plaster dusted with real red clay. |
 |
The warehouse is a laser kit that fit the space.
Kevin set up two “spots” for operations, one at the door and the second to the right (out of picture) at the Shell truck. The box car is a
Red Caboose High Point, Thomasville & Denton (HPT&D) furniture car
modified to have the proper brake configuration, etc. —though the height is not correct.
Kevin added the mail crane after looking at ICC documents. |

Here you can see the track display and switch panel for Belews
Creek on Kevin's layout. This area is on a peninsula. On the other side of the backdrop is Walnut Cove. To make the Walnut Cove N&W track connected,
Kevin made the shingle company siding pass through the backdrop
to become the N&W line in Walnut Cove. Since Kevin's layout
is narrow at this point, he opted to build a team track for the shingle factory instead of the building. |
 |
Kevin's representation of the shingle factory siding in Belews Creek—now a team
track since the factory building would not fit in the available
space. Modelers have to compromise in different ways than the
prototype did. |
 |
Kevin has used a Bachmann 4-6-0 complete with a
Tsunami 2 sound decoder to model Southern Railway's Class E Ten Wheeler.
Maybe he can upload a video of it operating to YouTube that I
can embed here. |
 |
Kevin uses a brass offering to model the
ex-N&W caboose purchased by the A&Y and renumbered to
X865 (per the
photo in the Porter collection that was uncovered when
Spring Mills Depot needed confirmation before agreeing to
produce an A&Y lettered version of their forthcoming CF
class cab). |
